You’re guaranteed to get wet with this fun, competitive raft building in Thailand event. This is the most popular event for beaches such as Hua Hin, Pattaya and Koh Samui etc and suitable for groups of any size. All you need is a sense of adventure and a positive attitude. If a team building event around raft building doesn’t appeal to you check out our fun beach sports including volleyball, football and some additional fun games.
We have combined two popular team building activities tailored around water! The traditional raft building with bamboo or building boats from card board. Both are extremely fun and if you can’t decide which one to choose – have both!
All About Boats Warm-Up Game
A great warm-up to this activity is the pen and paper game ‘Lost at Sea’. Your yacht is slowly sinking and the location is unclear. Your teams have a raft and are given a list of 15 items which they can take with them.
Their task is to rank the 15 items in terms of importance for survival. This is an exercise in group decision making and a great warm-up before the raft or boat building.
Raft Building Thailand – Castaway
Before you start your teams may need to find the equipment scattered along the beach.
During the planning phase, teams are given time to design their rafts. None of the rafting equipment can be touched during the planning which is usually delivered on a local beach near your chosen hotel.
Each team is then given the necessary equipment to build their rafts but don’t worry, we’re always on hand to offer some tips.
Raft Building Equipment
The equipment is made up of bamboo, rope, paddles and floats. The floats could be barrels (no chemicals) PVC pipe, or rubber inner tubes from tyres depending on location and budget.
The first team to complete their raft gets bonus points and then each raft is then subject to a safety check.
Top 3 Raft Building Thailand Locations
1. Raft Building Thailand – Hua Hin
Hua Hin is an ideal location for any raft building due to the larges beaches. The best beaches are near Khao Takiab as the beaches have little to no rocks unlike going toward Cha Am. We find that the location of beaches beyond Khao Takiab best such as the ones at the Pran Buri Forest Park.
Safety Warning – Jellyfish in Hua Hin
During the months of June to October care should be taken as there are jellyfish. During these months we would recommend using the hotel pool if permission is granted. It’s quite easy to spot the large white variety but the smaller white and brown jelly pack a more painful sting and cause deep burns to the skin.
2. Raft Building Thailand – Pattaya
Pattaya’s main beach is not suited for any kid of raft building due to the number of tourists, jet-skis and deck chairs on it. However, there are hotels with private beaches in Pattaya which we have used quite a few times for raft building on.
3. Raft Building Thailand – Koh Samui
The island of Koh Samui hosts some beautiful beaches and must be one of the best locations for raft building and card board bout building. Lamai is less crowded and as with Pattaya we wouldn’t recommend Chaweng Beach. We believe any corporate team building event should have at least a little privacy enabling team members to relax and become more familiar with each other.
Safety Checking Your Raft
We will test each raft rigorously before allowing them into the water. A few flips and shakes should tell it’s stability and going to survive the waves!
Once all rafts have passed the safety requirements each team takes their raft down to the water’s edge which could be on the beach or lake.
This part of the event is total fun as teams climb onto their rafts for some time in the hope that it doesn’t fall apart!
The raft must be large enough to carry minimum 4 team members including a series of races and relays to see how long they will last.
Could this be a case of sink and swim or will your team make it back to the beach!
Cardboard Boat Racing
If you’ve already participated in raft building with bamboo how about building a vessel from cardboard. Only bare cardboard without any kinds of plastic, foam, or wood etc. The only additional materials we provide, to help you build your boats are a selection of tapes, film and adhesive.
The activity and rules are similar to our raft building. When teams have completed their boats they must race them across a swimming pool or shallow pond. Be prepared to meet Davy Jones’ locker or become salty sea-dogs!
How much weight can a cardboard boat hold?
Before building you need to plane and ensure it will hold a person or two. To find out how much weight your cardboard boat can hold, multiply the volume of your boat in cubic feet by 62.4 lb/ft3, which is the weight of water.
How to build a cardboard box boat
Once you have the right calculations you need to sketch, design and plan your boat. Only then are you able to start building?
How do you waterproof a cardboard boat?
Use the duct tape to cover all the seams and then laminate the boat with film to ensure all the surfaces are sealed and covered.
These fun activities are highly focused on the following teamwork characteristics.
- Project management,
- Balanced participation,
- Shared common goals,
- and most of all – TRUST.
